The IMC Puntland Climate Web Portal is a comprehensive platform dedicated to providing climate information to enhance awareness and facilitate data-driven decision-making, the portal serves as a key resource for local communities, policymakers, and researchers. It aims to address the state’s vulnerability to climate change by offering real-time data and insights on various climatic factors.
Hydromet Monitoring Stations: To support its mission, the IMC Puntland Climate Web Portal relies on four types of hydro meteorological (hydromet) monitoring stations that collect diverse data related to climate and weather:
1) Automatic Weather Station (AWS): is designed to automatically send and record data gathered from different meteorological parameters such as temperature, humidity, pressure, wind speed, and rainfall. Within an AWS, sensors convert measurements of weather elements into electrical signals. These signals are processed and converted into meteorological data, and stored in a database.
2) Manual Rainfall Station (MRS) : uses a rain gauge to collect and measure the amount of rainfall received in a specific area over period. It determines the intensity of the rainfall measured in millimeters that falls over a unit area and taken by manually.
3) Synoptic Station (SS) : is designed to collect and record comprehensive meteorological data at regular intervals throughout the day. Data is gathered at specific times, typically every six hours, as well as at intermediate intervals. This information is crucial for accurate weather forecasting and climatological research, helping to monitor and understand atmospheric conditions effectively.
4) Ground Water Station (GWS) : This is a station that monitors water depth and quality parameters such as temperature, conductivity and salinity in boreholes and other groundwater sources. The stations are telemetric, recording and transmitting data at least once a day. Ground water monitoring provides information on short-term and long-term changes in groundwater recharge and aquifer storage. Data from the monitoring stations is useful in management and sustainable usage of groundwater resources.
The integration of data from the hydro met monitoring stations into the IMC Climate Web Portal enables users to gain a comprehensive understanding of climatic conditions in the state. This data not only assists in immediate weather forecasting but also supports long-term climate research and planning efforts.
